FansubPanel

Roles and permissions

Who can do what in a team: the owner, Fansub Admin, Fansub Moderator, Chat Moderator, task badges that grant no permissions, step assignment and the rookie period.

Updated:

FansubPanel has two kinds of roles, and they do different jobs:

  • Permission roles decide what you can manage in the team: opening series, inviting members, the subscription and so on.
  • Task badges (translator, proofreader, typesetter and the like) show who you are: they appear next to your name, in chat and in lists. On their own they grant no permissions.

Who works on a step of a chapter is decided by assignment, not by role.

Where to see them

Management → Roles. The page has three sections: Permission Roles, System Display Roles (the task badges) and Custom Roles. Each permission role's card shows its permission count and list; this is where you read exactly what a role allows.

Who can do what

Team owner — the person who created the team. Can do everything in the team; no permission check stops them. Buying, changing and cancelling a plan is reserved for the owner.

Fansub Admin — all permissions. Can do every permission-based task; only owner-only actions (such as buying a plan) are excluded.

Fansub Moderator — an assistant manager. By default they add and edit series, assign people to steps, create, edit and reset chapters, view workflows, download files, and manage announcements and files in the Team Hub. Inviting and removing members, roles, the subscription, and deleting series and chapters are not part of the Moderator role by default.

Chat Moderator — keeps the chat in order. Can delete regular members' messages and see their edit history; cannot touch admins, moderators or other chat moderators. The chat order is: Fansub Admin > Fansub Moderator > Chat Moderator > member.

Member — every member can read and write in the team chat. Anything beyond that comes from the roles and assignments they are given.

You give roles to members on the Members page: Members and invitations. For a permission set specific to your team, create your own role: Custom roles. The system's permission roles cannot be edited.

Who works on a step: assignment

To open and work on a chapter's step screens — translation, cleaning, typesetting and so on — you must be assigned to that step in that series. Even if your badge says translator, you cannot translate in a series where you are not assigned; and you can work on a step you are assigned to whatever your badge is.

  • The team owner, Fansub Admin and Fansub Moderator can open every step screen.
  • Assignments are made by someone with the Assign Series Roles permission: Step assignments.
  • Assignments of a person removed from the team give no access; membership is required.

Permissions add up

If you have several roles, permissions add up: if any of your roles allows something, you can do it; one role never takes away another's permission. Some permissions such as Create Chapters can also be granted for a single series (Chapter creation permission, see Step assignments); that is added on top of your team permissions as well.

What the menu shows

The management links in the sidebar are drawn by permission. Without the permission, the link is not shown:

Menu Required permission
Members Invite Members
Roles Create Roles
Team Assignments Assign Series Roles
Workflows View Workflow Status
Subscriptions Manage Fansub
My Data Download Files
Trash Delete Chapters, Delete Series or Manage Team Assets (any one)
Fansub Chat, Series Messages Read Chat

Fansub Settings appears if there is at least one team setting you can change (moderators can change some settings too). Team Board is open to every member.

The role editing screen lists only permissions that are actually enforced: Create Chapters, Delete Chapters, Edit Chapters, Reset Chapters, Read Chat, Write in Chat, Mention Everyone (@all), Invite Members, Manage Fansub, Remove Members, Download Files, Manage Announcements, Manage Team Assets, Create Roles, Delete Roles, Edit Roles, Assign Series Roles, Create Series, Delete Series, Edit Series, Update Workflow Status, View Workflow Status.

Rookie period

Being a rookie is not a role; it is a new member's first days. For that period a newly joined member appears with "Rookie" in front of their badge in chat and in lists (for example "Rookie Translator"). Their permissions do not change; the period ends on its own.

The "You are in your rookie period" banner a new member sees on the Dashboard

  • The length is a team setting: 7, 14, 30, 60 or 90 days (default 30). It lives under Rookie period in Fansub Settings; owners, admins and moderators can change it. See Team settings.
  • The period counts from the day the member first joined the team.
  • The team owner, Fansub Admins and Fansub Moderators never appear as rookies.
  • On the Members page a member's period can be ended early with End rookie period or restarted with Make a rookie again.
  • If the rookie period is turned off for the team, nobody appears as a rookie.
