Proofreading and revisions
Read the translation on the Proofreader screen, leave line comments, approve or request a revision; how a revision travels to the translator and back, and comparing versions.
Updated:
On the Proofreader screen you read the text the translator sent. If it is fine you press Approve and the work moves to the next step; if it needs fixes you leave comments on lines and ask the translator for a revision. The second half of this article explains how a revision travels between steps; quality control and typesetting revisions work the same way.
The top of the screen, the Workflow panel and Notes work the same on every step: What every step screen shares.
Where to find it
When the translator sends the text, the proofreader step opens and the assignee is notified. Your turn → Continue on the chapter page, the Proofreader row in the workflow list, or My Tasks → Go to Task.
Screen layout

- On the left: Downloads (download the RAW and the translation as TXT/DOCX), the translation's source (the source the translator chose, their note, SFX info), translation info (version, translator, character and word counts), Workflow, the untranslated-terms warning and the Glossary.
- In the middle, a toolbar: TXT / DOCX download buttons when there is a translation, the pending comment count, a comments (N) button that opens the comment list, and the Reading / Changes tabs. While the screen is locked (not your turn yet) a Read-Only Mode badge shows.
- Below, the text line by line, numbered. If the translator has not sent anything yet it reads "No translation found — The translator has not submitted a translation yet."
- Comments sit in a column on the right on very wide screens, and in a panel opened with comments (N) elsewhere.
Step by step: reading and commenting
- Read the text on the Reading tab. If needed, download the RAW from Downloads on the left or open it from the RAW Files (Reference) card at the top.
- Click the line you want to comment on. For several lines, click the first one, hold Shift and click the last one.
- Press the Add Comment button at the end of your selection.
- In the window, pick a Comment Type (Error, Suggestion, Question, Praise), write your comment, Add.
- Commented lines are marked; a line with an unresolved comment is tinted. Click a comment in the list to jump to its line. Manage comments with Mark as resolved, Reopen or Delete comment.
Comments stay as drafts until you request a revision; when you do, all of them are attached to the request.
Approving
If the text is fine, press Approve in the header. The step completes, you land on the chapter page, and the step named in the Next: … line (usually the typesetter or the visual editor) opens. Typesetting starts when both the text and the image track are done; if cleaning is not finished yet, typesetting waits for it.
Requesting a revision
- Press Request Revision in the header. The Create Revision Request window opens.
- Target Step: Translator. A text target has no file selection ("Text correction"); you go straight to the submit step.
- Revision Reason: optional if you left line comments (the comments are the request); required if there are none. Up to 2000 characters. The window tells you how many line comments will be attached.
- Create Revision Request.
Once sent, a Waiting for Sent Revision banner appears on your screen and your step is locked. Until the translator accepts it (Awaiting Acceptance) you can withdraw it with Cancel; Preview shows the request you sent.
The revision at the translator

An Incoming Revision Requests banner appears at the top of the translator's screen and they are notified. The translator previews the request:
- Reject (a reason is required): the request closes and your screen shows a Revision Rejected banner with the reason.
- Accept: the translator's screen switches to revision mode; they see your reason and comments, fix, add or delete lines and press Send to Proofreader. Details: The translation screen.
Coming back: comparing the changes
When the translator sends it back, a Revision Completed banner appears on your screen and your step is unlocked.
- The Changes tab (the number next to it is the count of changed lines) compares the previous version with the new one. Show all lines also shows unchanged lines.
- With at least two versions, Compare Versions on the left compares any two versions.
- Check whether your comments were resolved; if it is good, Approve, otherwise request another revision.
Who can do this
The person assigned to the Proofreader step in this series, plus the team owner, Fansub Admin and Fansub Moderator (Step assignments). You need write access on the screen to add line comments; before your turn you can only read.
Good to know
- If the workflow has no proofreader, line comments and text revisions are handled by the typesetter or the visual editor: they comment on the translation's lines and ask the translator for a revision (Visual editor).
- The typesetter, the visual editor and quality control also use Request Revision. If the workflow has a proofreader, a text fix requested by the typesetter or visual editor comes to you: an Incoming Revision Requests banner appears on your screen. After you accept it, Approve completes the request.
- A step can only have one open revision at a time; a step with an open revision does not appear in the target list.
